.     A total of 13 fishermen have been arrested in the Philippines after approximately 300 frozen turtles were found inside their trawler.

The Vietnamese boat was stopped on Friday near the Mangsee Island in Balabac, Southern Palawan by the Special Boat Unit of the Philippines Police Department.

Authorities believe the endangered turtles were heading to Vietnam and Malaysia to be sold.

Experts are still determining what species of turtles were caught.

Sea turtles are protected under Philippine law and the fishermen will be charged under both the Fisheries Code and the Philippine Wildlife Act.

While jail sentences under the Wildlife Act can be as high as 12 years, the majority of foreign poachers are generally deported without prosecution.
