. Catalonia has always been the leading region in Spain regarding animal welfare. Now, a year after the controversial law banning bullfighting was put into effect, Catalonia wants to ban the use of wild animals in circus shows.
Across Catalonia, 99 municipalities have already banned the use of wild animals in circuses, but now the entire region will soon adopt the ban making Catalonia the first Spanish region to do it.
“Society has progressed, and with it levels of animal protection,” said Josep Rull, a deputy for the ruling CIU Catalan nationalist bloc.
Rull also quoted Gandhi and said that: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” and explained that with the adoption of the proposal “Catalonia comes closer to the rest of Europe.”
“The Catalan Civil Code is the first one to recognize that animals are not things, but sentient beings that require rights and protection,” said Oriol Amorós, a deputy for the ERC Catalan Republican Left.
