China Southern Airlines announced that it will “stop transporting live primates for laboratory experiments on all flights of China Southern Airlines, effective from March 21, 2014″.
According to the PETA, only last year the airline shipped more than 2,500 primates to different US laboratories to be used in cruel and unnecessary experiments.
Mimi Bekhechi, associate director of PETA UK said: “China Southern has listened to PETA and with its decision to end shipments worldwide of frightened monkeys to suffer and be killed in laboratories, recognised that cruelty doesn’t fly.”
Air France is now the only major airline to continue with the transportation of monkeys. Click here to ask Air France to stop sending monkeys to their deaths.
There are around 125,000 primates living in US laboratories every year, where they are abused and killed in slow and painful experiments.
Most monkeys are born in laboratories, brought from breeding facilities or kidnapped from their mothers in the wild.
‘Research shows that 90 percent of primates in laboratories exhibit abnormal behaviors that are caused by the physical abuse, psychological stress, social isolation, and barren confinement that they are forced to endure. Many go insane, rocking back and forth, pacing endlessly in the cages, and engaging in repetitive motions such as back-flipping. They even engage in acts of self-mutilation, including tearing out their own hair or biting their own flesh,’ sates PETA on their website.
The US is also the only country, together with Gabon, to continue to conduct invasive experiments on chimpanzees.
