Guadalajara, the capital of the State of Jalisco, Mexico, has banned the use of animals in circuses and shows.

Article 113 of the city’s entertainment rules now states that it is “prohibited in the entire municipality the temporary or permanent establishment of circuses or similar events that offer or use for commercial, charitable or educational purposes, either as a primary or secondary attractive, the exploitation, exhibition and participation of animals whatever their species.”

The Animal Protection Unit will now be responsible for verifying that every show that comes into town doesn’t include animals. Violators will be fined 6-60 thousand pesos and the animals could be seized.

The new law also allows civilian organizations to accompany government officials during the inspections.
