The Wallon government is moving to ban fur farming in the region from 1st January, 2015.
A draft, prepared by animal welfare minister Carlo Di Anotnio, was adopted at first reading and is now ready for approval from the Council of State and the Wallon Parliament, animal rights organization GAIA reported.
“This is a major victory for millions of animals, who suffer in fur farms all over the world. It sends a clear signal to the other regions in our country to end this horror once and for all,” GAIA director Ann De Greef said in a statement.
Wallonia is a southern region in Belgium which makes up 55 per cent of the country’s territory and is home to a third of its population.
According to GAIA, over 150,000 minks are killed in Belgium every year.
