A record haul of more than 1,000 endangered sea turtles destined for China have been seized in Nha Trang, Vietnam.
“The turtles were all dead,” said Le Hong Thai with the Ministry of public security’s environmental police department.
“They were meant to be processed into handicrafts for export to China.”
Sea turtles are fully protected under the law and animal welfare organizations are urging the court to follow the law and let smugglers see that animal cruelty is a serious crime that will not be tolerated.
“The case is under investigation, so we cannot reveal the number of detainees or any other details,” Thai added.
