Vietnamese authorities have seized a truck in Hanoi rescuing thousands of cats from the meat market thanks to a public tip.
Hanoi police said the truck was carrying over 3 tons of live cats that had been smuggled into the country from neighbouring China.
“After receiving a tip, we searched the truck and discovered the cats inside,” said Dong Da district deputy chief of police Cao Van Loc to the DPA. “The owner, also the driver, said he bought the cats at the border area of Quang Ninh province.”
Loc explained that Vietnamese law states that any smuggled goods, including live animals, must be destroyed, but they were trying to save the animals because there were so many and it wouldn’t make sense to save them just to kill them.
The driver will be charged with transporting goods without the proper documentation and will be fined around $350.
