A dog was found with a 27 kg chain wrapped around his neck in Bernalillo County, New Mexico.
Animal control officers were called and they immediately took him to a local shelter for a vet check.
“I was horrified,” said Mary Martin, director of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. “I was saddened because we see these things more often than we would like to.”
“People were using the chain as weight to build the dog’s muscles,” added Martin. “They want a very powerful dog, either potentially for fighting purposes or sometimes just to have that look.”
“That is abuse, without a doubt,” Martin concluded.
Investigations are ongoing. Anyone who recognizes the dog is urged to contact the shelter or the police.
