A dog in Valparaiso, Chile, dug a pit and buried her puppies to save them from a blazing fire that consumed more than 500 hectares in the cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar.
Negrita the dog used to live in the gatehouse of a bus station that doesn’t exist anymore due to fire.
According to witnesses, she made sure the pups were all safe and then she went to hide somewhere else. After the fire was contained, she led volunteers to the pit to rescue them.
It took volunteers some 45 minutes to remove all the puppies from the pit, which was still hot. Luckily everyone was still alive and they were all reunited with their mom.
“We knew they were here, but we didn’t know if they were alive. We know them and always bring them food,” said one of the rescuers.
The now extinct fire destroyed hundreds of acres forcing thousands out of their homes and leaving dozens of people injured, not to mention all the lost vegetation and fauna.
