The Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulin Cruz Soto, has officially banned horse-drawn carriages in the capital this weekend in an effort to protect horses from abuse after another horse collapsed in the street on Thursday.
According to Cruz, she decided to sign the executive order to stop “the deplorable conditions of exploitation and mistreatment to which the horses are submitted on the streets of Old San Juan.”
“Many people who visit or live in Old San Juan have witnessed the conditions that the horses undergo while pulling those buggies.”
She ordered the new law to take effect immediately to prevent more horses from dying of exhaustion and neglect in the street.
“I urge citizens to report any situation of animals being mistreated. We do not permit activities that threaten the lives and safety of animals. I am committed to the well-being of the animals and my administration will halt any activities that threaten them,” Cruz added.
